Apple is expected to introduce 2nm chips next year, just in time for the iPhone 17 lineup. Recent reports suggested they might be built by TSMC, but the Taiwanese chipmaker has struggled with production.
Cupertino has reserved TSMC’s entire 2nm capacity, but due to the low yields of the new process technology, the SoC will only launch in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
According to reports out of Taiwan, the chip company has demonstrated the new product, but still needs help from other suppliers to get the chip ready for installation in smartphones.
Partners are to provide materials, equipment, silicon intelligence (IP) and electronic design automation (EDA). According to the Chou News Agency, a situation of “group struggle” has gradually emerged.
The 2nm line has already been installed at the Baoshan factory and will begin trial production in Q3 2024, three months ahead of schedule. TSMC is expected to supply the N2 process to Apple and Nvidia, helping the company stay ahead of Samsung and Intel in the chip market.
