Google just announced a brand new operating system called Android XR. ‘XR’ stands for ‘extended reality’, the umbrella term for virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality headsets.
Think of Android XR as a direct competitor to the visionOS that powers Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Google will bring many of its apps such as Maps, YouTube, Chrome and Photos to the platform. It plans to support other Play Store apps as well.
Google Chrome promises to offer improved multitasking capabilities and let you open and organize your browser tabs as you wish.
Google’s Gemini AI will be a key feature of Android XR, making the user experience easier. It helps you in every task and captures audio and video.
Of course, Android XR is still in its early stages, but the company expects to launch products running Android XR sometime next year. Google and Samsung are even already working on a headset codenamed Moohan, which should be available in 2025.
