Today, Google Photos is getting improvements to search, allowing you to use more descriptive searches using everyday language. One example Google gave is something like “Emma painting in the backyard,” and you can see how it works in the video below.
You can sort results by date or relevance, making it even faster to get to the specific image you’re looking for. This experience is currently rolling out in English for all users on Android and iOS, and will expand to more languages “in the coming weeks.”
Select US users will also get early access to Ask Photos today through Google Labs, provided they have opted in the waiting list. This supercharges search with the power of Gemini AI. Ask Photos understands the context of your photo gallery – the important people in your life, your hobbies and favorite foods, that kind of thing.
This way it can extract relevant details to help you find specific memories and reveal information about your life. The video below shows how this works by using “What did we eat at the hotel in Stanley?” as a question.
Because Ask Photos is essentially a chatbot within Google Photos, it’s a conversational tool. If Ask Photos doesn’t find what you’re looking for right away, you can provide additional directions or details.
You can also ask it for help summarizing the best things you did on a trip, and suggest the best photos from a specific event. All this works through the magic of Gemini models.
Google says humans can review your Ask Photos queries to improve the service, but only after you disconnect it from your Google account to protect your privacy. The answers Ask Photos gives you aren’t reviewed by humans, except when you provide feedback or in rare cases to address abuse or harm.
