Last-minute preparation and car culture go hand in hand.
You’d think you’d outgrow the rush as the stakes get higher, but the setup night at the Essen Motor Show (EMS) proves this is far from the case. A great event is worth its weight in gold, but I prefer the chaos that comes with it for the doors officially open.
Contrary to what you might expect, high-profile events such as EMS often have a preview day for media and press before the public is given access to the halls.
Having early access is one of the perks of this job: you don’t have to fight for a shot or dodge from unaware visitors standing right in your line of sight, making coverage of shooting events much easier.
But ironically, somehow maneuvering through a ballet of cars being hurried into place, dodging forklift drivers on frantic missions and trying not to trip over piles of pallets and boxes is even better.
The crowds were to be expected, but I hadn’t counted on a bird of prey flying past me and landing majestically on a ledge. Meet Clara, a working falcon who is tasked with keeping the halls of Messe Essen free of pigeons while the shutters are open at night.
With the preview day today (Friday) plus two public days for me (the show lasts a whole week though), December on Speedhunters will kick off with some of the best modern and classic tuning Europe has to offer.
I’ve also spent the last few days bouncing between Stuttgart and Munich, spending time with three of Germany’s legendary brands and coming face to face with everyone’s childhood hero – the Need for speed most sought after BMW M3 GTR – bee BMW World.
But for now, I hope you enjoyed this quick look at the manic energy and meticulous planning that goes into an event as grand as the Essen Motor Show. Also look at its scale…
I’ve teased a few absolute gems, but I’m saving the best for my main coverage. Stay tuned for more!
